The unique characteristics of healthcare data make them particularly challenging to aggregate and analyze, including restrictions on protected health information, the unstructured and unstandardized nature of electronic medical record data, and the high performance computing and specialized knowledge required to process emerging genomic data. Upfront investments in technology infrastructure and personnel are considerable, while longer-term returns on investment are difficult to quantify.
